Back to Kuala Lumpur! Compared to last year’s Asia Grand Voyage it’s still humid and traffic is still bad. My tour is basically the same as last year, but with a few differences.
We started at the same place, the new palace – Istana Negara. The view from outside the gates is still annoying. The “no good angles” theme runs thru the day. PS: those are Malaysia flags, not USA…
However, I did get a different kind of guard picture for you.
From the Palace viewing zone you can see the dome of a mosque. I think that is called a “qubba“. I do like me some Arabic and Islamic architecture.
I swear they deliberately obstruct good photography view points. Even the wiki of the National Mosque don’t have decent ground-based images.
More architecture for you. Last year the former British colonial government buildings near Independence Square were covered by scaffolding. Today they are beautiful. The whitewashed brick works great with the copper domes. I particularly enjoyed the air conditioned gift shop.
Here is the old train station. Since we are talking the 19th century, this is kind of like building a modern high tech airport. They built to last and built with style.
After lunch we visited the KL Tower. “But Cruiseboy, what’s the difference between a building and a tower?” Boom.
It is the seventh tallest tower. I wonder how high?
I’ve been on Tokyo Skytree (the tallest tower), and I far prefer its viewing levels. KL has lots of crisscrossing support structure blocking any kind of continuous viewing.
While we did visit the Petronas Towers, it was surrounded by construction so I didn’t get any decent pictures. However, here is a side-shot from KL Tower.
Probably the tour highlight of the port was the evening visit by local Malaysian dancers.
Camera note: I mostly focus on landscape and wildlife photography.
- During this cruise I’ve been playing with how to take moving stage pictures. So, I’ve been messing with settings.
- In addition, it’s hard on the Silver Dawn as our theater is rather flat, so it is difficult to get an angle without the back of an audience member’s head
- I can’t really move for positioning without disturbing and/or blocking other guests
- Finally, the stage has a rear LCD backdrop, so there are colored lights projecting right at us
So, with all that whining, here’s what I got.
