Safari

Greetings, Cruiseboysians. Today I start traveling to east Africa for a photo safari!

But first – I’ve added the “best of” pictures of my 2025 Asia Grand Voyage to the Album page. Standard warning: these are full-size pictures. I’ve added the Asia GV to the Index page.

Now, back to the safari.

Tanzania / Kenya Safari Path

I’m traveling with friends from my 2023 South America Grand Voyage. But first, I have over TWENTY FIVE HOURS of flight time.

  • 10 hours – Phoenix to London
  • 4 hour layover
  • 9 hours – London to Nairobi
  • 2 hour layover
  • 1 hour – Nairobi to Kilimanjaro

Fortunately I’m arriving a day early. If I don’t get any sleep during my flights I will be doomed by jet lag.

While I like that I am visiting more sites than during my 2006 Kenya-only safari, I’m worried about the number of flights. Yes, it saves time. Yes, it allows for visits to more different sites. But I tend to dislike so many flights over just two weeks. However, I think these are charter flights, so I don’t think there is a bunch of lost airport time. This is organized thru Tauck, who run this tour 40 times per calendar year – so I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt.

My big investment (besides the cost of this actual trip) is buying a 100-500mm zoom lens. I hope to be able to reach out and capture some detailed wildlife photos. We shall see.

I am staying at hotels every night. There should be internet, but I have no idea how effective. In 2006 I had to wait until I got back home to process my pictures. I plan to post daily. Stay tuned.

  1. Tauck has a reputation for good safari tours. With my camera I can download photos directly to my ipad to review, make some edits etc. Many safari camps and lodges now have wifi, but not all. Have a great time.

  2. Wishing you safe travels! That’s some hard core flying to get to your starting point!
