Puerto Rico

So, after almost 10 weeks of cruising we have arrived at San Juan, Puerto Rico. I took the walking tour of the old town followed my making our own mofongo and mojitos. I will consider this exercise and you can’t convince me otherwise.

Our guide said that San Juan is the oldest city in the United States, by some 100 years. As expected, during the colonial period there was a lot of conflict around such a good port. The old city walls are impressive.

We then passed the Colombus statue and the street that leads to the PR governor’s house. I have no idea why there are pink butterflies over the road.

We then got to see a very skinny house. Our guide said “thinnest in the world”, but I think there is some debate there.

After two hours of walking, we were about to rebel, so our guide took us to the cafe. We started with the mojitos.

Seems you need to slap the mint to release the taste (I think the formal name for this is “bruising”). Then you grind the mint and lime wedges in the cup, add the booze and ice and shake. Even more exercise, but it was tasty.

The mofongo uses a chicken creole stew with casava and plantains. We started by mashing the casava while adding a garlic sauce and fried pork rinds. The stew was excellent – I took pictures of all the recipes. My first week back home will need to be organizing all the recipes I’ve picked up. I know my sister will expect me to make some of them when she next visits.

While walking back to the ship I see we found a friend. The Vision of the Sea holds 2,400, about four times what the Silver Moon carries.

We now have two sea days to return to Fort Lauderdale, FL. Once I get home, I’ll need a few days to review all my pictures and add them to my online albums. Stay tuned!

  1. Kate and I loved our time in PR. It was best part of cruise in Dec 2021. We would love to return and explore it further.
