Location: Shanghai, China
After two days crossing the East China Sea we arrived outside of Shanghai to solid fog. For the first time on this world cruise, we could not enter our port and had to wait several hours before the pilot allowed us to proceed. The constraint was both ways, for once we started entering the port there was a continuous stream of outbound ships.
Another thing unusual is our docking location – far up a river. It’s different to dock so close to downtown.
The distinctive building is the Oriental Pearl transmission tower. The whole cityscape lights up at night, with a parade of party boats going back and forth
Since our docking was delayed, I missed my scheduled dinner event, but there is another one tomorrow.
Itinerary Update
We received a note that “for safety and security” our destinations for the cruise are changing. We are not visiting Mombasa, Kenya and Lome, Togo – but will change to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Takoradi, Ghana respectively.
I’m glad that Silversea is keeping track of such things, but it’s a bit spooky.
Student “R” asks if you ate “puffer fish” in Japan.
Student “T” asks if you eat that tiny food and then go to McDonald’s (or somewhere) for more food after eating the tiny food. AND…do you miss cooking your own meals?
Student “S” asks for a picture of a monkey at some point.
Mr. DeHart saw his geisha…he is happy.
Student “O” asks if you pet the cats at the cat house? (I told them you were cat person)

– I did not eat puffer fish, but one of the guides talked about it; I don’t have enough boredom in my life to need to eat something that chancy
– I did occasionally eat street food in addition to our normal meals, but more to taste different things than being hungry
– There are some “comfort meals” that I cook at home that I have missed over these two months. I plan to gorge on them when I return, and then start a six-month porridge only diet to make up for all this amazing cruise food.
– I’ve missed some good monkey picture opportunities, but I expect more in South West Asia and Africa
– I did get to pet the cats, but there were many other folks in the cafe, so some of the cats had all the petting they needed
– The captain sponsors a cocktail reception at the start of every leg (for new guests), just like in the movies. In addition all the officers rotate thru the main dining room and randomly send invitations to cruise guests to their table.
