Lisbon

Location: Lisbon, Portugal

After a three-week South Africa-to-Portugal segment, the longest segment of the world cruise, we now start our shortest segment – only one week. Portugal-to-London, the last segment of the world cruise. Everyone is starting to feel a little bit maudlin. Sad to leave, but ready to get back home.

Lisbon, Portugal, is a lovely and historic city. However, it seems most of the cruise guests have already visited it. Often. I originally signed up for the “Baroque Lisbon & the Art of the Tiles” tour. But it was cancelled due to low numbers. I then signed up for the “Lisbon & the Gulbenkian Museum” tour. It was cancelled due to low numbers.

So, I decided just to wander around. The cruise ship terminal is only a few blocks from the tourist center and within view to São Jorge Castle. I pretty much threw a dart at the Lisbon map and walked. Of course, that took me up all the hills in the city, but I accepted my fate and kept climbing.

Ships

The sort-of square building is the cruise ship terminal building. The Silver Whisper is on the left and the Costa Favolosa on the right. The Costa ship carries 3800 passengers compared to the Silver Whisper‘s 382.

The view of the city from near the castle was wonderful.

Lisbon

I had no idea that the Portuguese decorated the outside of their homes with ceramic tile.

Purple Tiles

Yes, those are purple tiles on the house to the left. The Yellow house is painted.

I grabbed lunch and returned to the ship by way of King Joe’s house.

Lisbon deserves more than a four-hour wander. Hopefully I can make it back.
