Safari, Day 1

Location: Sabi Sabi, South Africa

This is the longest field trip I’m taking during this world cruise – 4 days/3 nights. There is about 40 of us occupying three separate lodge areas in the Sabi Sabi within the Sabi Sands private reserve, which borders Kruger National Park. There are no fences between Kruger and Sabi Sands, just a river.

We traveled for most of the day, and arrived at the lodge around 5:00pm. So, we tossed our bags in the room and took a quick two-hour drive. And we found some stuff. The “Big Five” in Africa are the elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, lion and leopard. And during the first day in two hours, we saw three. Unfortunately, the rhino and buffaloes were in the bush, but we had a great position on the elephant.

We also a good view on a Kingfisher.

As the sun set the scrub hares started to show up.

It has been many years since I’ve been at a place with so little light that allows me to see so many stars.

I have to get up at 5:30am tomorrow for the early morning drive, so I’m sacking out now. More next time.
