Technical Post: Time Zones

En route to Darwin, Australia. Arrive on 12-Feb.

Living in California I’ve grown accustomed to the number of hours difference to the East Coast and Europe. However, as my cruise ship sails west from San Francisco, I’ve lost track. There are various web sites that will tell you the time in certain cities, but it seems the Silver Whisper’s satellite internet link thinks I live in Luxembourg.

I’m not kidding. That must be where the satellite downlink goes.

We get a daily new letter each evening with the next day’s schedule of events. On the front cover we are reminded when to change our clocks before going to bed when needed. For example, tomorrow evening (11-Feb) we need to move time back before arriving at Darwin. I’ve taken to just updating the time zone on my PC, phone and tablet. But I’ve lost track of the time of friends and family.

So, I’ve been using Time and Date.

Pick a Dot

Once I set my PC’s time zone, I can mouse over any of the “dotted” locations and see what the time is there. You can’t really trust the visual north-south time zones.

Sidenote: while I knew it was done, I was surprised by how many places have time zones +/- only 1/2 an hour. Look for the areas with multi-colored hashing (like central Australia, and Darwin).
